evaluating our impact
We conduct surveys at the end of each school year to measure program success. In addition to survey data, we gather information from elementary and middle schools on attendance, grades, and standardized tests scores.
Some of our greatest results can't be captured in facts or figures. The bond that develops between a "Big Buddy" college mentor and "Little Buddy" student is a measureless but sure sign of success.
Benefiting Kids
Many children exhibit better school attendance and improved behavior after joining the College Mentors program. Eighty-three percent of parents say their child's self-esteem has also improved. In a survey of Little Buddies:
- 77% say they now try harder in school
- 84% have learned about different jobs
- 87% have learned about finances, money and savings
- 93% want to go to college
"Before College Mentors I was making bad choices and now I am making good choices and not getting office referrals. I can tell anybody something if I am sad. I can talk to them at College Mentors." –Chris, Little Buddy, 2nd grade
Benefiting Families
University campuses become a helpful resource rather than an intimidating institution. Several parents have even begun to pursue higher education on their own as a result of their child's experience with College Mentors.
"College Mentors has been an incredible program. [I'm] a single mom; my daughter really enjoys having someone other than just me in her life to look up to and learn from. Thank you!" –Parent of Little Buddy, Arlington Heights Elementary School
Benefiting College Students
Eighty-three percent of our "Big Buddies" say College Mentors has taught them how to be a role model. College students develop lasting leadership and management skills through the program. Mentors are also more likely to finish their college careers and support charitable causes.
"I learned I have the ability to be an important figure in a child's life. To know I have influence over her decisions and can relate to her have taught me the importance of responsibility and the need to engage in community service." –Mentor, DePauw University chapter
Benefiting Communities
By promoting educational achievement and professional goal-setting from a young age, College Mentors helps develop productive, motivated adults. A better-educated workforce is more likely to contribute to the economy, vote and volunteer.
"For many students, your program is the best thing they have going for the week. I don't think you realize how many lives you have touched over the years. Keep up the good work!" –Teacher, Anderson University chapter
