June 29, 2012 | Indianapolis
Harrison College, a private sector college based in Indianapolis with more than 6,000 students studying at 12 campuses and Online, partnered with College Mentors for Kids to help College Mentors win $2,000 in the Central Indiana Service Challenge.|
The Central Indiana Service Challenge was sponsored by Companies With A Mission (CWAM), an organization founded in 2011 that provides opportunities that inspire a culture of service and spirituality in the workplace.
To enter the challenge, corporate teams were required to volunteer with a nonprofit organization and create a video about their impact and service. Harrison College came to College Mentors’ headquarters office to help with the spring annual fund campaign.
Laura Mishkin, College Mentors for Kids’ director of corporate and foundation development, said that Harrison College has remained an outstanding partner and contributor to the organization.
“Time and time again, Harrison College has shown their commitment to assisting us in serving communities throughout the Midwest,” Mishkin said. “We were thrilled when they approached College Mentors to team-up for the Service Challenge. It’s another example of how much Harrison College supports our mission.”
The volunteers were from the Career Services and Student Affairs staff team at Harrison College. Lead volunteers, Robbie Lopez and Tammy Thomas, stated they chose to volunteer with College Mentors because of the two organizations’ shared commitment to education.
“We decided to participate in the Central Indiana Service Challenge first and foremost to recognize the great work of the College Mentors for Kids program, as well as to show the dedication to volunteerism Harrison College possesses,” Thomas and Lopez said. “The experience was an enjoyable one for us and it was wonderful to meet College Mentors’ staff. We truly support and value the mission of the College Mentors’ program and believe the more people who know about it the more successful it can be. With education comes success and in the end everyone wins.”
The $2,000 award was presented to College Mentors and Harrison College at an awards program before the Indiana Fever game on June 2 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. 90 corporate-nonprofit teams entered the competition and were recognized at the game.
In total, CWAM awarded 23 teams $100,000. Out of the 90 participating teams, three won $10,000 each for their charities, 10 second-place teams won $5,000 for their charities and 10 third-place teams received $2,000 for their selected partners.
