College Mentors for Kids Announces First National Brand Ambassador

April 28, 2016 | Indianapolis, IN

In the heart of its first capital campaign, College Mentors for Kids announced today its first National Brand Ambassador, WNBA All-Star Shavonte Zellous. Zellous will be launching Shavonte’s Champions, a scholarship program to award deserving students in College Mentors for Kids national mentoring program. Promise Indiana will support the effort in setting up recipients’ scholarships in a College Choice 529 plan towards higher education costs.

“This program allows kids to dream big and create a mentoring relationship with a college student that may have been through some of the same struggles when they were growing up to be where they are today. It's important to have college students help the younger generation strive to believe that one day they can attend college just like them,” Zellous said.

“It is fantastic to be able to partner with both Shavonte and Promise Indiana to change the life trajectory of the kids we serve. Shavonte’s own success demonstrates the power of mentoring, and her commitment to giving back is an inspiration for our college leaders,” stated Dennis Trinkle, CEO of College Mentors for Kids. “We are excited to introduce her as a role model to the kids we serve as well as our college student mentors. We are also excited to have the assistance and support of a proven college funding program that clearly works. We know that together we are going to build brighter futures for these kids!”

Zellous currently plays guard for the New York Liberty after six seasons with Indiana Fever. She was part of Indiana’s 2012 WNBA Championship team and was named an All-Star and the league’s Most Improved Player the following season. Prior to her career in the WNBA, Zellous was a standout basketball player at the University of Pittsburgh.

College Mentors believes in the transformational power of mentoring to help kids break the cycle of poverty and prepare them for life while developing college students as young leaders through service learning. College Mentors for Kids’ mission is to connect college students with the most to give to kids who need it most.
